SPECIAL ELABORATION PLOT AREA

The area of special elaborations of the winery is a nursery of ideas, from which wines from farms and monovarietals of limited edition emerge. Wines to love, investigate and collect.

Among the estate wines stands the most singular of all: El Regollar. Its vineyard, located at the top of Villabuena, is over 110 years old. Its pre-phylloxera strains tell the story of the vineyard in Villabuena through its wrinkles.

And with its monovarietal collection, the winery proposes a journey through the purest expression of its main grape varieties: old vines of Tempranillo, Graciano, Malvasía or Garnacha.

At Bodegas Amaren we feel and love our vineyards. That’s why we would love to share our passion and invite you to a journey through the purest expression of our main grape varieties, Riojan Malvasía, Garnacha, Graciano and Tempranillo sourced from vines over 60 years old.

This experience allows you to discover our 60 single-varietal wines.

We will start with a glass of Riojan Malvasía (also known as Rojal) paired with a gilda -the area’s quintessential pinxtxo, consisting of Spanish pickled green chillies, anchovy fillets and green olives skewered on a cocktail stick.

We will then go through the special wine making projects area to enjoy a 100% Garnacha made from our Vallondo plot, planted in 1960. We will continue towards the bottle cellar and the area where our whites and micro-plot wines are made, where we will unveil one of the rarest native varieties in Rioja Alavesa: Graciano.

You will savour this wine with a serving of cured sheep cheese. After that we will go to the barrel ageing room to visit a a 16th-century underground cellar. The cherry on top will be a glass of Amaren Reserva 60 Tempranillo paired with an assortiment of charcuterie.

Intro Enoturismo

Bienvenidos.

CONCRETE, RETURN TO THE PAST

The harvest is made in the month of October. The grapes harvested in boxes enter Bodegas Amaren and go directly into cold storage where they remain overnight at 6 degrees. The objective is to produce a pre-fermentative intracellular maceration in the grapes, which will help to extract their primary aromas as much as possible.

All the grapes that enter Bodegas Amaren go through the double selection table of bunches and grains.

With AMAREN, Juan Luis Cañas chooses to go back to the origins of his roots, and elaborate the wines in concrete tanks, as was done in the days of Ángeles. The deposits that are currently used in the cellar are of small capacity (15,000 L), fully restored with epoxy resin, and a temperature control system. The concrete protects the wines from thermal shocks, allows a greater extraction of the fruit, and a natural stabilization for the wine.

Amaren Crianza and Ángeles de Amaren were the two exquisite wines to begin the journey of this winery, which expresses itself with elegance, delicacy and its own style.

OUR VINEYARDS

In Bodegas Amaren, the field is a way of life. They are true experts in working the vineyard, and the plots to them are the pieces of the perfect puzzle.

The winery is located in Samaniego (Rioja Alavesa), and is surrounded by 65 hectares of vineyards aging between 35 years and 110 years old. These small plots are characterized by their locations; lands of calcareous clay which originate from low fertility. With a unique microclimate, the vineyard honors the winemaking tradition of the region by offering low production, bunches and grapes of small size and excellent quality. Its department of viticulture is key to getting things rolling, all of them true artisans of the vineyard, work meticulously to maintain control over each plot.

Given the characteristics of the vineyard, all the work is done by hand and in some cases, with animal traction. It is about nurturing  the land in the most natural way possible and following the guidelines of a rational viticulture to preserve the great diversity of animal and plant species that populate each plot and respecting the vineyard and its surroundings, in order to collect healthy grapes by hand and produce healthy wines.
